Bovaer Feed Additive

There has been a lot of social media interest in the Arla Foods trial of ‘Bovaer’ feed additive in 30 of its farms across the UK.

Arla is trialling the feed additive on dairy farms supplying Morrisons, Tesco and Aldi. Bovaer claims to ‘*reduce enteric methane emissions from cows by 27% – depending on feed and cow management systems’ (*www.arlafoods.co.uk/news)

‘The active ingredient 3-Nitrooxypropanol blocks the last step of methanogenisis in the rumen, temporarily oxidising the Ni-cofactor in the enzyme methyl-coenzyme M reductase; this reduces the generation of methane in the rumen’

We want to confirm that we are not an Arla Foods supplier nor are we taking part in these trials for the Bovaer feed additive or similar.

At Mawley we are already working hard to reduce our environmental impact and increase sustainability. One of the ways we do this is through our renewable energy systems, including a biogas plant that provides the farm with electricity and hot water from capturing methane in cow slurry.

Verified by 3rd party audits, we’ve proven our commitment to sustainability, being placed in the top 10% of dairy farms with the lowest emissions output.

We always welcome questions and feedback so do get in touch if there’s anything you’d like to know.
